If you’re planning a visit to the Sinharaja Rainforest (and you should), Rainforest Edge is where it’s at. The clue at this property is really in its name. It really is right on the edge of the rainforest, and bar the sounds of the forest, everything around is quiet.
At Rainforest Edge most common areas are alfresco. From the striking outdoor infinity pool to the delicious (and plentiful) Sri Lankan-style meals, everything here soothes the soul. Our bathrooms open out onto the treetops giving us the most spectacular view-from-shower ever. You can spend your days reading in hammocks just off the dining room, or pick a book to take back and read in the treetop-facing balcony in your room. The spa was still being renovated when we visited, but once it is ready, treat yourself to an Ayurvedic rubdown, or just do lazy laps in the pool. All the food we ate was fresh, locally-sourced, and Sri Lankan. Service is warm and kind.
Bring your own toiletries because their offerings are basic, plus carry your own booze for evening G&T’s because their menu doesn’t include liquor. Plus city slickers: this should come as no surprise but there is wildlife- there are lizards and frogs and centipedes and the hotel staff are careful to let them be.
On the day we departed we woke at sunrise and were greeted by a wall of mist that slowly cleared into the quiet stillness of the forest at dawn. It’s a view worth coming back for, over and over.
