We’ve all got jewellery we never take off. For some, it’s a wedding ring, or the little studs you wear with everything. There are also special pieces that are tied to time or place or occasion.

Perhaps it’s the chains you never take off in summer when your shoulders are bare and the sun is shining or the dangly earrings you add to an outfit when you need a little extra oomph… jewellery is personal, a ritual that is woven in with personal histories and preferences and stories. We adore both sorts – the stuff you sleep in and bathe in and adventure in and you never take off, and the special bits that come out when you’re looking to add a little something to an outfit, and that you hope you’ll treasure forever.

In case you missed it, we made some jewellery. It is deeply, deeply Nicobar in that it is an ode to journeys and to memories imbued with meaning and made solid, for keeps. This small (but perfectly-formed) capsule is gold-plated and bathed in muted sunshine, plus it is, much like our clothing, designed for layering, and to customise and personalise to make it truly, uniquely your own.

Jewellery is personal, a ritual that is woven in with personal histories and preferences and stories.

We found shells on a beach in the Maldives, picked a lime slice out of a gin & tonic (for real), and picked the leaves that fall around our garden studio (among other found objects) and cast them in lightweight metal before plating them in gold, committing their every natural facet and flaw to permanence. These charms that can be slipped onto hoops and chains, in singles or multiples… they’re designed for stacking if you like your jewellery that way, or if you prefer the subtle glint of a lone charm nestled in your clavicle, they’re also designed to be worn that way. These pieces are light, but special will work with every single thing in your closet and will travel the world with you.

Need some help with layering? We have a few pointers.

Start with the piece that sings to you
Like everything, it’s important to go with your gut. Is there a chain length that feels inherently you? Go with that one, even if the trend if for more snug choker-styles. Do you like big hoops all year round? Then go with that!

Then add
An easy trick is just to layer by length, starting with your shortest chain and working up to longest. Add pendants and charms in the same way, with the lightest and smallest on the shorter chains, and heavier pieces on longer lengths. This way you can see each piece rather than ending up with a jumble of charms all competing for the limelight.

There are no rules
You really can’t get this wrong. If it feels good, it’s good. Some of our team are piling on the charms, threading multiple large pendants onto the chains and earrings, and some have picked a matching pair, one for each year. As long as it fits with your everyday style, don’t let any restrictive ideas hold you back.
